After running my own business for 20+ years, I made the decision I wanted to start living life, not just watch it through the eyes of everyone else that was travelling.... So I decided to take the plunge, sold my business in 2022 and hit the road.

I had been traveling for years, but due to work constraints only for short periods so the change to Full-Time travel was hard!!

Going from a 4 bedroom house to a house on wheels was a huge transition, but such a good one!!

So after 3 years on the road, I thought it was time to share how I'd managed to do it and how I continue to travel.

My Biggest Tip for Traveling Australia

Coming from a highly structured business background with tight deadlines, letting go of long-term planning didn’t come easily.

Before I even set off, I had the first nine months of my journey mapped out in detail.

It didn’t take long to realise that this approach can work against you.

Some places you expect to love might not resonate at all, while others will completely steal your heart. When you’re locked into a rigid itinerary, you’re forced to stay in destinations that don’t excite you—or leave incredible places far too soon. Even worse, changing plans often means losing money on pre-booked accommodation, eating into your travel budget.

Of course, there are a few experiences in Australia that do require advance planning. The Spirit of Tasmania needs to be booked well ahead (unless you’re happy to stay in Tassie longer than planned), and Ningaloo Reef is in high demand, often requiring bookings up to six months in advance.

But beyond these essentials, I’ve learned that the best way to travel Australia is with a flexible mindset. Have a rough idea of where you’d like to go, then allow yourself the freedom to follow the journey as it unfolds.

It took me over a year to truly embrace this—and it completely transformed the way I travel.

MY HOME ON WHEELS

Life on the road wasn’t a spur-of-the-moment decision—it was a deliberate choice I made in 2022. Back then, I was towing with a 200 Series LandCruiser fitted with GVM and GCM upgrades. It was a capable setup, but I was operating right at the limits, and the vehicle was constantly working hard.

In 2024, I stepped up to a Chevy 2500HD, and it completely changed the way I travel. While it uses a little more fuel, the trade-off is undeniable: exceptional comfort, effortless towing, and total confidence on long-distance journeys. I’m now well within legal weight limits, and love them or hate them, American trucks are purpose-built for serious touring. My home on wheels is a 2018 Jayco Adventurer 19.6.2, purchased new and proven across countless kilometres. It’s a van that’s earned my trust, taking me far beyond the beaten path and into places most caravans never see. Over the years, it’s been refined with thoughtful upgrades—some born from experience, others designed to enhance off-grid living and remote capability.

Fishing is woven into my travels, so bringing a boat was never optional—it was essential. I began with a side loader on the LandCruiser. While functional, it was time-consuming and physically demanding, which meant the boat didn’t see the water as often as it should have.

Today, I run a Mozzi Boat Loader, and it’s nothing short of a game changer. The simplicity and speed of unloading and reloading has transformed the way I travel and explore Australia’s waterways.
